Empress Elizabeth of Austria, living in an unfulfilled marriage with the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria has a passion for horses and hunting with the hounds meets Captain Bay Middleton in England at the home of Earl Spencer at Althorp and her world changes but Bay has met Charlotte Baird and has fallen in love with her, another wealthy heiress.  The heiress Charlotte and the Empress both desire Bay, but Bay is but a poor military captain without wealth.  Bay who lives to ride in the Grand National horse race must make some hard choices concerning Sisi (the Empress), Charlotte, and riding in the Grand National.

This novel is a look into the lives of rich and famous historical figures from the late 1800's  A great look at what rules their lives especially custom and appearance.

I enjoyed the story.  While the ending was somewhat predictable, it was fun and enjoyable getting there.
