Continuing the story of John Ames, pastor of a small church in Iowa, that was begun in Home and Gilead, Lila comes into John Ames life on rainy, cold day and a new life begins for both John and Lila.

Lila, who as a toddler was rescued from a neglected existence by drifter Doll leads an itinerant life.  It was a hard life with Doll but better than the one she had been taken from.  Lila revisits her life and learns to live the life of a minister's wife that is is safe and loving.
